My Letter To The Just Born Company Regarding The Peep Widget

by K Panda last modified Aug 12, 2008 09:51 PM

Well, since I am an honest person I felt obliged to inform Just Born (the makers of Peeps) of our Peep Attack widgets. On their web page they have an area where you can contact consumer relations and after filling in the necessary fields I wrote the following letter.

Dear Just Born,
I thought you may be interested in a rather startling relevation regarding a Peep in the computer world. I recently made a Peep Widget for Mac's Dashboard program, which, if you are not familiar with it, is simply a program which allows you easy access to simple programs. The Peep widget didn't really do a whole lot, simply flipped between yellow and purple. But the response was good...hundreds of downloads...requests came in for new versions. So I made a new version that randomly changed to one of 7 different colors...once again the response was good. So, I made one more, version 2.0, this one flips between 8 different Peeps.
This morning I was amazed to see that the Peep Attack widget, so named since you can clutter co-workers and friends desktops with them, was listed on Apple's Top 50 Widget Download's site. More than 1300 people have downloaded it and it has only been available for 2 days.
Now, I knew Mac owners liked Peeps, but I guess they REALLY like Peeps. I thought it would be best to make you aware of this. I hope that you see my intentions were really just to allow people the ability place a Peep on their computer for fun. But, as it seems very popular I thought I should let you know of it's existance and request your permission to use the Peep likeness in my widget. It is entirely free and I will never make any money from it and of course your company has been given credit. However, if you would like I will freely surrender the widget to you for any reason you like. I also offer it to you for the Peep Fan Club, and if you permit, I will continue to develop it with an "Endorsed By Just Born" logo. Being originally from Fountain Hill, Pa., I am proud to promote Peeps worldwide and I wanted to make sure I avoided violating any Peep copyrights.
Your Sincerely,
K. Panda

PS- I hope you allow me to continue to develop the Peep widget, and if you do, would you be willing to make a web image stating that it has been endorsed by you that can be displayed on the webpage where it is available?

Update:

If any one is wondering, Apple removed the original Peep Attack widget from their site and replaced it with Peep Attack Pro. I had submitted both, and they decided they were too similar so they chose the one they thought was best.

Still no word from Just Born. I am going to assume that I will not be getting a Cease and Desist letter at this point.
Downloads are up in the 10,000 range. I kid you not.
